A Person of . . . Determination

Great dancers are not great because of their technique; they are great because of their passion.

—Martha Graham

ARISTOTLE

One day a young man came to Aristotle, the great philosopher, and begged, “Please, Aristotle, I want to learn all the knowledge you possess. Teach me all you know!” to which Aristotle answered, “I’ll consider your request. But first let us go for a walk down by the river.”

The young man followed Aristotle to the riverbank. Once there, Aristotle picked up a stone and dropped it into the water. “Retrieve the stone,” directed Aristotle. As the young man stooped over to pick up the stone, Aristotle dunked the lad’s head under the water and held it there until the boy began to swing his arms and squirm for freedom. He needed to breathe and was intent on getting the air he needed.

Discerning the lesson was learned, Aristotle released his hold on the young man. Gasping, the young man heaved in great gulps of air, and once he caught his breath demanded, “What did you do that for?”

Aristotle said simply, “I will give you and teach you all that I know, but it will do you no good unless you want it badly enough—unless you want it as much as you wanted air to breathe.”
